NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER John Grisham takes you to a different kind of court in his first basketball novel. Samuel “Sooley” Sooleymon is a raw, young talent with big hoop dreams—and even bigger challenges off the court.

“Hard to put down ... the pages turn quickly ... building to a climax that won’t leave readers doubting whether this is a John Grisham novel.” —Associated Press

In the summer of his seventeenth year, Samuel Sooleymon gets the chance of a lifetime: a trip to the United States with his South Sudanese teammates to play in a showcase basketball tournament. He has never been away from home, nor has he ever been on an airplane. The opportunity to be scouted by dozens of college coaches is a dream come true.

Samuel is an amazing athlete, with speed, quickness, and an astonishing vertical leap. The rest of his game, though, needs work, and the American coaches are less than impressed.

During the tournament, Samuel receives devastating news from home: A civil war is raging across South Sudan, and rebel troops have ransacked his village. His father is dead, his sister is missing, and his mother and two younger brothers are in a refugee camp.

Samuel desperately wants to go home, but it’s just not possible. Partly out of sympathy, the coach of North Carolina Central offers him a scholarship. Samuel moves to Durham, enrolls in classes, joins the team, and prepares to sit out his freshman season. There is plenty of more mature talent and he isn’t immediately needed.

But Samuel has something no other player has: a fierce determination to succeed so he can bring his family to America. He works tirelessly on his game, shooting baskets every morning at dawn by himself in the gym, and soon he’s dominating everyone in practice. With the Central team losing and suffering injury after injury, Sooley, as he is nicknamed, is called off the bench. And the legend begins.

But how far can Sooley take his team? And will success allow him to save his family?

Gripping and moving, Sooley showcases John Grisham’s unparalleled storytelling powers in a whole new light. This is Grisham at the top of his game.

Awesome!

Sooley was one of the best books that I have ever read. Although it wasn’t one of Grisham’s legal thrillers, this basketball story was heartwarming! The journey of Sooley from being a freshman to a basketball star was definitely surprising. And the descriptive words. Grisham always writes great books. And this is not an exception. Though a lot of people said that the ending was disappointing, it wasn’t because of the words, it was just because of the events that happened during the story end. The ending was a huge twist. Everybody predicted that Sooley would become a huge star with so many procedures done. It was actually disappointing for me too that Sooley died at the end. Plus, Sooley would’ve become a great basketball player. Overall, it was such a good read. BTW, sorry for letting you read a review this long. But I really do recommend John Grisham’s books and certainly this one. 🤩 Amazing!

Sooley lacked depth

The story was very basic, I felt like I was reading a long newspaper article, rather than a rich, in depth novel. The plot was very predictable for the most part and the characters were very shallow. Only saving Grace was that the book was relatively short. I would not recommend it.

Mr. Grisham takes us on some completely unexpected twists and turns, at least for this reader. Very entertaining and fast-moving. As always, I appreciate his ability to educate readers on social issues in a way that doesn’t chastise the us for our absence of accurate knowledge. He just inspires me to learn more and remain aware of the issues. If you are a rabid basketball fan, you will not be disappointed. Play after play is described in b-ball language. Gotta admit, I had to look up a lot of terms but that just made it fun.

Thank you for bringing to life the struggle of being a refugee along with the spirit of humanity. Reliving each part of the journey, the story comes alive from start to finish. Even the climax with a saddened ending could not complete the hope and promise Sooley began with. Thank you for the basketball but thank you for the important story of humanity.

Not just a basketball story

John Grisham takes the heartbreak of the South Sudan and American college basketball and weaves a heartwarming story. Sad

The ending was good but could have been just as good with a reunion instead of a statue unveiling. I loved the book until the death of the beloved main character. I was in shock and dismayed when that scene took place. There is enough death in real life and I do not have to pay 15$ to read the obituaries. Mr. Grissom should write for Gray’s Anatomy.

Best Ever

As a lover of Grisham’s legal thrillers, I was prepared to be disappointed since this novel was totally different…but was I ever wrong! Sooley is the most fascinating sports related book I have ever read, and Grisham’s knowledge of the recruiting, the coaching, the strategies, the emotion, the promotion, and the players in the game of basketball is astounding, He made me feel like I was right there in that refugee camp, and later on the bench in that Final Four game. The gut wrenching ending brought tears which turned to tears of joy as Sooley’s family was extricated from the despicable conditions of that African refugee Camp to a wonderful life in Durham, NC. Thanks, John for your best ever.

🤩 Amazing!

Not just a basketball story

John Grisham takes the heartbreak of the South Sudan and American college basketball and weaves a heartwarming story.

This was not worth the 14.99 plus tax. The endless basketball and recruitment talk was boring. There was barely much of a real story going on. Ending was quick and I hardly felt any sadness about what happened to the star bc the book was too boring!

Not just a basketball story

John Grisham takes the heartbreak of the South Sudan and American college basketball and weaves a heartwarming story. The reader soon appreciates the power of sports to create escape, community and growth. The story is well written, as are all Grisham books. The basketball games are well narrated and give the reader the anticipation of being at a game.

🤩 Amazing!

I think that I have read every one of Grisham’s books. The story line is impossible to believe. His worst.

Sooley

What a ride ! A great story. Love the departure from the normal legal story lines. A really great read.

🤩 Amazing!

Sooley

Even without being a basketball fan, reading about the character, Sooley, who came from nothing to the big “American dream” was extremely engaging. I fully recommend this read. Thanks

Awesome!!!

I could not put this book down. Stayed up the past two nights reading long into the night. If I didn’t need to work I would’ve continued to read all night. Wow. Great and tragic.

Legendary

Loved this story. As much as I love John Grisham’s legal thrillers, this book is one of my favorites.

Awesome, Riveting, Heartbreaking and Heart Warming

I could not put the book down. Missed 2 NBA playoff games reading Sooley. Cheered and cried. Great writing. Thanks John Grisham.

Dooley by John Grisham

A very interesting read with Sooley’s success. I haven’t been able to determine if Soolely is fictional or real: undoubtedly he came to life in the book as a great basketball player.

Nice story

As always well written

Sooley

One of the best books John Grisham has written. Story so well told it was difficult to put book down and didn’t want it to end. Congrats on a wonderful book.

Sooley lacked depth

The story was very basic, I felt like I was reading a long newspaper article, rather than a rich, in depth novel. The plot was very predictable for the most part and the characters were very shallow. Only saving Grace was that the book was relatively short. I would not recommend it.

Don’t waste your time.

Simplistic. Boring. Predictable. Written for beginning readers.

Great read!

“Sooley, Sooley, Sooley”

He shoots…He scores!

A fine novel

Enjoyable page turner, tragic & heartbreaking toward the end, but a fine redemption.

Boringg

Have read every Grisham book. I’m a big fan. After 289 pages I stopped reading this one out of sheer boredom.

Typical Grisham

Excellent and quick read. I enjoyed every word.

Just plain excellent

Loved this book. Not a lawyer novel, but still vintage John Grisham! This book is so well done. I might read it again

Why

What a boring story - and why do that at the end - I waited for pages for something to happen - and then that - nope, not his best and certainly a brand dilution

spd221

Great book until...

...the ending! What a disappointment! Still a good read overall.

Great story

Good story. Not sure that I like the ending though. I’ve had disappointment with some of Grisham’s endings but I’ll take this one and shut up.

Excellent

This was such a good book. You don’t have to know anything about basketball, as myself, to enjoy. I rarely give 5 stars - this one deserved it.

I hated it

Stick with what you know John

Waste of money

This was not worth the 14.99 plus tax. The endless basketball and recruitment talk was boring. There was barely much of a real story going on. Ending was quick and I hardly felt any sadness about what happened to the star bc the book was too boring!

ECGoad

Not just a basketball story

John Grisham takes the heartbreak of the South Sudan and American college basketball and weaves a heartwarming story. The reader soon appreciates the power of sports to create escape, community and growth. The story is well written, as are all Grisham books. The basketball games are well narrated and give the reader the anticipation of being at a game.

Sooley

John Grisham never ceases to amaze. This story touch my soul. I hated to see it end. Sequel anytime soon?

Heartwarming Story

Notes from PKH

Sooley

A Great book that was sad and inspiration. One of my favorite John Grisham Books.

Excellent read

Loved the characters and plot. One of his finest. Couldn’t lay it down. I’ve enjoyed every one of non-lawyer books. Books just remind you what a talented writer he is all all formats. I enjoy his lawyer books too. Thank you Mr Grisham for the entertainment. Sooley will remain in my mind for some time.

Pharrball

If you love basketball, you’ll love this book. If not, it will be a bit of a slog. The basketball action is described in great detail.

Score another for Grisham

A wonderful tale about dreams fulfilled and leading to a beautiful ending. Highly enjoyable.

The story friendship and perseverance, but mostly, family ❤️

An enriching story of hope, love, strength, and fortitude. Never give up, keep hold of your heart, and go forward. A wonderful story told in full circle.

Great story telling

This book is exciting, moving, and sad. You root for the main character and you ache for the families.

doctingey

An academy award winner!

This is an awe inspiring work of art, and would certainly make a “Best Movie Award,” if given the chance on the big screen! “Sooley, Sooley, Sooley!!!”
